Week 11 EOC: Forced Choice

Roland Moore
June 15, 2011
Forced Choice

1.       Ashley Tomlin:  She had the best research out of the class, and had the most convincing graphs to back up her research.
2.      Coral McGarvey:  I really liked her idea and the information that she received it was easy to understand.  I was just not interested in the topic.
3.      Elizabeth Manning:  Loved the layout of her project very easy to navigate.  It was broken up into sections which made it easy to see the outcome of the survey.
4.      Roland Moore:  I believe mine is a good as the ones in front of me but their project is just more appealing.
5.      Lana Cunningham:  Great project.  Great use of words really draws you in and can’t wait to see how the survey went.  Then she only has one graph.  Hard to understand with only one graph.
6.      Cristin Wacaser:  Great idea just not enough information to support it.

Week 10 EOC: Use market research to make money

There are many things that I have thought about in this class that I could make money off of.  Not even by having a real job, but just by having the knowledge of what market research is and what is can do for a company.  The main thing that I really liked and leaned in this class was when I saw the movie big.  It was a kid in a adult body and he was able to use market research to help the company become bigger and better.  “Descriptive research is intended to describe the characteristic of a population or phenomenon.” Marketing Research Kit for Dummies pg.43.  This is just saying that we really need to know what we are talking about and really need to be in depth in what we are researching.  The way that I will use this class to make money in the near future is to use all of the market research that I have done in this class to find a way to get more people to join my gym.  I can find ways to get more people to join that gym.  I can really find out what women want out of their gym, because I think that is where the money is in women.  “Something as simple as a researcher smiling or frowning can influence the way participants behave during an experiment.” I would love to talk to women about what they want out of a gym and get commission on how many women join in the first month.  I think that is where the money is you talk to a women about classes at a gym and if they have kids how safe their kids are while they work out.

Week 9 EOC: Network, how much research shaped the network

The thing that I noticed the most in the movie was that they really used the fall of a man’s life to help them grab more viewers on their TV show.  The first thing that I noticed was when he talked about killing himself it was looked at like a bad thing and Dian used it has a way to make a whole new show and that became a huge hit.  The stronger that he felt about how bad his life was and how bad the life of the rest of America was the more he talked about it and the higher the ratings were.  There was a part in the movie that showed Diane that she had a great experience with the bank robbers and she wanted to make a show out of it.  She noticed that this is what America wanted. They wanted new things and new things to see on TV.  That is how at the end of the movie she used her new show to end the run of an old amazing show.  The network understood that even though they had something really good going that it was going to be the end of the network.  That is what is so bad about a network and that all they really care about is rating and future rating of the network.  That is why at the end of the movie they committed a huge crime by actually killing off the main character just to save the ratings.

Week Six EOC: Tax Cuts

First off when I started to read this article it is like every other politician they always ask questions that no one understands.  The questions are based upon what not many people would not understand.  If you want people to get involved with questions that have to deal with money then you have make the question so people would understand it.  These are very open ended questions.  This entire question hit really soft parts on people because since there is not that much money right now all the questions were asked about people wallets.  The way that these questions needed to be asked is right to the point.  You need to see if someone wants taxes raised not beat around the bush.  In the article that they needed to ask questions about the economy and needed to say that some of the tax cuts did not work and those are the ones that you should survey about.  Not to put a damper on a sour subject but I really just think that people need know more what they are talking about and if they don’t understand the survey then they should not take it.  The survey was a really good way to confuse people even more about where their tax money is going.  Like it said in the book too many open ended questions is not a good thing.  Using a double barrel question, gave people two things when they don’t understand one.  They needed to write clean and precise questions.   As we discussed in class today I really just think that questions should be asked right the first time.

EOC Week 7: Survey

The survey that I want to find out about is at Town Square, having to deal with Blue Martini.  I want to find out when people get done with work, or on their day off if they would go up and grab a drink at Blue Martini.  If they do I want to know why they do and if they don’t I want to know why they don’t.  I also want to find out what would Blue Martini have to do to get their fellow mall employees into their restaurant.  I want to ask people that work in retail in the mall and the restaurants.  I also want to ask security what it would take them do go up there on their day off.  I believe that Blue Martini can do a better job for mall employees and I am going to find out what it is going to take.

Research Opportunity

The thing that I talk about for my market research problem was that I wanted to do something for Blue Martini in Las Vegas.  One of the main reasons that I wanted to try and help out Blue Martini was because they are in the mall called Town Square that I work at.  I believe that there is so much future potential that they have but they just don’t see it.
The main thing that I wanted to talk about was that I think that they need to find a way to get more mall employees to come to their bar more.  The way that I first thought about it, was when you have someone get off work and they get in their car and drive to a different bar when there is one right in their mall you have to find a way for them to stay there.  I know a lot of the people that work at Blue Martini, and I had asked them before what is a good night for mall employees to go if there is one.  I always get the same answer any night because there is no special night or deals.  The main problem with Blue Martini is that they think that they are the best place in that mall and they almost seem too good for deals for employees.
I talked to one of the VIP host and talked to him about an idea that I have for mall employees.  The first thing I told him was that you have to find a way to get more of us into your place because it will only do good things.  I told him that we get a lot of people into our store and it could be very easy to tell them about Blue Martini.  I told him that is free adverting for your place.
The idea that I had was to have a mall night or to make some sort of discount card for mall employees.  Anything is better then nothing. During a weekday they charge us same as everyone else to get in.  I said that this just really has to stop.  Free entry and have to give some sort of deal as well.  I told him that some money for people is better then no money at all.  I told him just to make people feel special make up a card and give it to the stores so they can give them to their employees.  I think that Town Square is a little community and me being form a small town we all need to work together to get each other business.  It is really hard now a day to get people into your store or restaurant and to buy something is even harder.  Just start working together I don’t see how it could hurt anything for sending a customer to another store.  That way you help out your fellow employee and you help out the customer.

Week Five EOC: Prvacy?

After reading the Wall Street Journal article I am really scared to do anything online any more.  I have always thought to some cause that someone is looking at what I am doing, but I think that it is going to far.  If you really sit and think about it, think about all the stuff that you do online and how much things you buy or look at.  We pay bill we buy clothes and so much more.  I have sent personal info online or have posted things on facebook that anyone can see.  I think that a lot of people know that people can see what they are doing, but as long as nothing bad happens I think that they are okay with it. “A 20-year-old woman stalked through the Internet and killed. Thousands of e-commerce customers watching as their credit card numbers are sold online for $1 apiece.” Msnbc.com. Just reading the first line really freaks me out.  Then reading the second line scars me too.  What should we do about this?  It says that a girl died and people are selling credit card numbers too.  This has gone way too far.  The theft of data of over 77 million users of Sony’s PlayStation network (including credit card information of 280,000 of its 715,000 Australian users)” http://www.ethiopianreview.com/index/20111/400121.  This just happened last week and this has been a really big deal.  Think about all the people that have money and buy things online form Sony.  Everyone got hacked and as the quote says there is a lot of credit card information that is out there now.  “Everybody points to advertising. That’s just the tip of the iceberg,” Jackson said. “We as consumers don’t have any knowledge of what really goes on out there.” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3078835.  This just goes to what I was saying no one really want to know what is going on they just live on with their lives until one day it involves them.

Week Four BOC:Beautiful Stranger TV

The thing that is really neat about beautiful stranger TV is just what it is.  The site used just random people of the street or people that they see and use them.  Not in a bad way.  It makes just random people like you and I look really good.  It praises people on what they wear and what they are doing.  It is a sight that shows people doing fun things this shows everyone else that the world is not a bad place, but that there are people still out there that like to have a good time and enjoy their life.  The significance of a sight like this is in what I just said.  I shows people enjoying their life and I think somewhere a lot of people have lost that.  It is about many different people in many different fields and talks about what they are doing and how they are doing it.  Just a way to involve more than just the really famous people and get to talk about the little people.  The range of people that they find our use is really neat.  There are so many different people out there that have the same interest as you and sometimes we just don’t know that they are out there.  It is everything that you want in a site.  There are video picture and many other ways to see how they get involved din these peoples life.

EOC Week 4: Big Movie

After watching the movie Big there are some really good marketing research methods that were used.  The first one that we saw was the focus group that we talked about in the book.  This one would cost at least $10,000 dollars to get started.  The second one that was in the movie was brain storming.  The third one that they used in the movie was longitudinal.  The focus group is where you get a group of people in this case kids to test out the product that they were trying to sell.  It was a lot of kids in this really big room just playing with toys that the company were about to start selling.  The second type was the brain storming.  This was when they were in the meeting room and Josh the main character came up with a new and better idea.  After he came up with the idea the whole room just started to blow up with many ideas.  It stated from one little thing and then got everyone talking about it.  The last thing that they talked about in the movie was longitudinal, and that is when you do research for something for over a long period of time.  The problem that they had in the movie was that the thing that they researched for was not good info.  After they found out that it was not good research then they started to brainstorm on something that would work.  The brain storming session was a good scene watching everyone work together.

Week Three EOC: 9 To 5

The main thing that I really liked about what they did for the movie was that they used actual secretaries to see how they feel about their boss.  I could just see from the short parts that we watched in the added scenes that the producers really wanted to make this feel really real for the women that were going to watch it.  There were a lot of ethical things that we talked about in the book that were also shown in the movie.  One of the biggest things that I saw in the movie besides stealing was that the boss always tried to get with the secretaries.  Sexual harassment is a huge thing in the industry and the movie did a great job of showing that.  The other things that the movie showed that was unethical were that the boss was stealing from the company.  That is why the secretaries wanted to show him a lesson.  I really wanted to talk about the little things that I saw in the movie that I think are unethical.  I think that if you don’t make a work place a friendly place to work that people don’t want to be there and it makes work even harder to do.  When the boss came back he noticed that that everything was different he hated everything.  Then he finally realized that it was working out really well.  In the short story all of the women made everything very ethical and did it all the right way.  The movie just shows that there is an ethical way to do things.  I did not like the part at all where the women had been there a lot longer than the guy and he got the raise just because he was a guy.  Those are things that have been going on for a very long time and movies like this just like to show that, because it is wrong!

EOC Week Two: Survey and its Results

My survey is about what kind of pasta people like and what kind of pasta sauce they want on it.  This is a cross sectional survey.  This survey was done a Olive Garden in northern California.  The pasta that was surveyed was linguini, fettuccine, fusilli, farfalle, ziti, rotini.  The sauce that they talked about was alfredo, marinera, florentina, Quattro formaggi.  They only surveyed 22 people.  I will give the numbers in the order that I said what was being surveyed.  The pasta 5 of 22, 5 of 22, 4 of 22, 3 of 22 and 2 of 22.  The sauce was 5 of 22, 7 of 22, 4 of 22 and 6 of 22.  The reason that they wanted to do this survey was because they wanted to see what kind of food to put on the menu.  Olive Garden wanted to see where to put food on their menu.  The things that sold more would be more toward the front of the menu and the things that sold not so much would be more toward the back.  “Of course different people care about different products to different degrees.”  Marketing Research Kit For Dummies.  This was a great quote that I found out of the book because it is such a true statement.  Knowing more about your product will always help your business.  Knowing more about your customer and what they want especially with food can always help a restaurant and what to put on your menu like in this case.

Week 2 BOC: Quiz

1. What is a booty pop, and what is its significance?  A Booty Pop is a special designed shorts that makes a woman’s butt look bigger.  They are for a girl that wants to fill out her jeans or to fill out a dress that she is warring. http://bootypoppanties.blogspot.com/.

2. Who spends more $$$ online, men or women?  Proportion? (%, $).  With this question I was really shocked with the answer.  I really thought that women would spend a lot more on line, but I was wrong.  A survey of 6,500-web shoppers online say on average men spend $326.00 and women spend on average $284.00.  http://www.opentechsupport.net/forum/general-news/30799-men-spend-more-than-woman-online.html.  I am for sure not one of these people.  I have only ever bought one thing online so that is for sure not me at all.

3. Who spends more time online, men or women?  The first site that I found said that women spend 30% more time online then men do.  It also said that women on average spend 5.5 hours of time a month online and men spend 4 hours a month on line. http://socialtimes.com/women-more-on-social-web-than-men_b18934.   When I first saw this I really did not believe what I saw.  I know that women spend a lot of time on line, but I really thought that men would have spent more time then women do.

4.What advantage do marketers have for women shopping online than men?  Women are a lot easier to market to. Men are the hardest people to sell too.

EOC Week One: What I am exspeting from this class

There is always a lot to lean in Mr. Pintos classes.  Last quarter I did really well in his class and really enjoyed what I learned and really took it to hear to try my best.  This quarter I am expecting the same thing out of Mr. Pinto and I am going to try my best again to get another A.  This new class is about marketing research.  This is Mr. Pintos major and what he did in college so I am excepting a lot of good things to happen and think that I am going to lean a lot of information that I will be able to carry with me in the future.  Chapter on say live it, learn it and love it.  This I think is all about marketing and how much fun that I think it can be and how much that I think I can learn.  Mr. Pinto said that in this class we will be doing a lot of research to see how companies market their products and how they go about selling.  There are so many different companies out there that don’t have a great product, but they have great marketing and that is why they are at the top of their field.  How to understand how to sell something and understanding what people want I think is a gift.  I always expect the most out of Mr. Pinto’s classes, and seeing that this is his specialty I know that he won’t let me down. I am excited to see what I will lean in this class!
